This teak Zanzibar chest is covered with decorative brass studs which form an intricate pattern with some religious motifs. Inside are the original brass hinges. This well proportioned chest is highly decorative and has good age and patina.

History ~
Such chests were often used to transport dowries and export spices or store coins. Circa 1860, East Africa.

Condition ~
Consistent with age and normal use.
